WHY THE ELECTRIC PYLON

The electric pylons are distributed all along Italy and support lines which reach the most remore areas of the landscape. It is without doubt that their presence impacts the environment, however, they are necessary because electricity has become a dispensable good. Since we cannot do without it, ENEL has tried to mitigate their impact im various ways. For example, they are painted green or brown to reduce their detectability in the environment. Also, there is an increasing effort to reduce the risk for electrocution by adopting scaring devices and other signalling solutions.
The power utility lines and the pylons are commonly used by birds of prey. From there they observe the territory and move for hunting. In many case the utility lines cross habitats with high density of preys (and thus good hunting grounds) but with no or little availability of nest sites. In open habitats such as those represented by agricultural landscapes, the bases of the pylons represent the only areas not mowned by tractors and with spontaneous vegetation. Small rodents are abundant within the bases of the pylons and their burrows are protected for years...
The bases of the pylons in open landscapes are like islands of biodiversity, and the birds of prey hunt frequently there.
