THE NEST BOXES FUNCTIONS

Not all the birds make their own nests. Many birds use old nests from other species or lay eggs in holes in trees or cavities in buildings. Artificial nests are well accepted by the birds which do not make a nest. The kestrel, in particular, has adapted very quickly to use the nest boxes provided by ENEL on the electric pylons. With time the kestrel has preferred the nest boxes to the other sites available in ist habitat. As a consequence, in the area of Rome the number of breeding pairs has rapidly increased and is almost three fold with respect to the situation before the installation of nest boxes. In some cases, when the nest boxes were positioned in the vicinity of occupied nest sites, the kestrels moved into the nest boxes.
The nest boxes are shown in the 'photogallery . They are made in plywood resistant to rain and painted with a non-toxic transparent coat. The roof slightly protudes to avoid rain inside and the floor is drilled with holes to favour water spillage. There is a bedding of soft torf inside which help to maintain dry and at constant temperature the eggs. Measures and instructions on how to build the nest box for kestrels is available at Ornis italica.
The kestrels were not the only birds using the nest boxes: tawny owls, jackdaws, and sparrows also nested in it. Obviouslt, various types of nest boxes are available for the various bird species.
