NEST ON-LINE OF JOHN AND TANIA
During the last two decades the hurring gull dramatically changed their habits, becoming “urban”. This species, indeed, moved from the coasts to the inland not during the wintertime but also during the reproductive season, learning how to nest using the city buildings. The herring gull prefers to eat fishes but also any other food item that can be a source of protein. It usually visits landfill looking for food in the trash, or foraging along the water stream where it can find every edible thing bringed by the river. But it can also searching the food in arable field looking for invertebrates, or the urbanize area, preying pigeons and other animals.
In Rome too, the herring gulls nest in the historical centre, on the top of the monument, on the roof of churches and on the tallest buildings. John and Tania are two of the several herring gulls that leave in the roman historical centre. Their nest is located on the roof of a building, very close to Piazza Venetia, a very crowdie area, with many tourists and urban traffic. The nest is very simple, balancing at the top of the roof.
As the last two years, Tania layed two eggs, as big as a chicken egg but with a different colour, varying from grey to green which they will incubate for twenty days. Parents are very careful and they actively defend the nest from human or animal intruders.
