| NEST ON-LINE OF LORIANA AND ROSARIO |
 |
Loriana and Rosario have occupied the nest box for the first time this year.
They started to nest later than the other kesttrels in the region and they laid four eggs. Usually, kestrels lay 5-6 eggs at the beginning of the bnreeding season (March-April), but then, in May only four or sometimes three.
One of the four eggs was unfertile and now the parents are busy in rearing the three chicks born between June 6 and 8. The nestlings are carefully fed by their parents, which bring lizards and sparrows, and will be ready to fledge in about four weeks. They grow very quickly and during the last two weeks the wing length increases of 7 mm per day.
Compared with the Claudia & Ics’ nest there is almost one month delay in the development. If we consider all the nests on pylons of the region the delay is about two months.
The parents care for their chicks in early morning and they produce many vocalisation. Then the visits are brefier. After the first week, particularly because of the warm air temperature, the parents do not brood any more the nestlings and spend most of their time out of the nest, searching for preys. Even if far from the nest, both parents are always ready to protect their offspring and to chase a hooded crow, eventually too close to the nest box...
